Symantec pcAnywhere hack exposes 200,000 PCs: analyst

Even though software company Symantec released a patch for its pcAnywhere program after it was infiltrated by hackers, as many as 200,000 computers are still running the infected version, including thousands that may have access to credit card and other sensitive data. These numbers are according to Rapid7, which surveyed the Net for computers that were running unpatched versions of the software

Apple has given developers yet another few months to implement application sandboxing for OS X apps, a security feature brought over from iOS: the deadline is now June 1, 2012. While the intent of sandboxing is to prevent hacked apps from taking over a user’s system, however, the sandbox design inherently limits functionality that users and developers have come to expect on the desktop

For almost three months, versions of three widely distributed open-source applications from Horde.org contained a backdoor that allowed attackers to remotely execute malicious PHP code on systems that ran the programs. Members of the Horde Project warned of the tampering earlier this week, in a bulletin that advised users of the collaboration and messaging applications to immediately reinstall newer versions that didn’t contain the malicious code. Those affected included anyone who downloaded installation packages for Horde 3.3.12, Horde Groupware 1.2.10 or Horde Groupware Webmail Edition 1.2.10 between various dates in November and February 7.

Twitter has acquired web security firm Dasient , a real-time link checking system that scans URLs for malware and other online threats, in a move that will likely make clicking a link on the terse social network safer in future. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
