The jury has wielded the axe on the 25 semi-finalists in the Electrolux Design Lab competition, leaving just eight finalists from the original 1,300 entries to battle it out for the prize of a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design center and 5,000 Euros (approx. US$6,350). The 2010 brief asked industrial design students to consider how people will prepare and store food, wash clothes, and do dishes in the homes of 2050, when 74 percent of the global population are predicted to live in an urban environment.

Droid 2 so similar to original, only a mother could tell

Verizon put the original Motorola Droid to rest this week, but not without releasing a refresh for one of the most popular Android smartphones in the US. According to iFixit, the Droid 2 is so similar to the original Droid that the company’s Droid repair guide can still be used for most repairs.

YouTube announces support for 4K video resolution

Today, at VidCon 2010, YouTube announced support for what it is calling 4K videos; meaning videos shot in their original aspect ratio “all the way up to 4096p.” Here is what YouTube had to say: Today at the VidCon 2010 conference, we announced support for videos shot in 4K (a reference resolution of 4096 x 3072), meaning that now we support original video resolution from 360p all the way up to 4096p. To give some perspective on the size of 4K, the ideal screen size for a 4K video is 25 feet; IMAX movies are projected through two 2k resolution projectors. We always want videos on YouTube to be available in the highest quality possible, as creators intend.

During a keynote address at WWDC today , Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the next revision of the company’s iconic iPhone hardware. Dubbed “iPhone 4,” Jobs called the new iPhone model “the biggest leap since the original iPhone.” He said that the new device has over 100 new features, but he detailed eight of them during his presentation. Booth babes have long been a part of the trade and enthusiast show experience, but since its inception, Penny Arcade Expo has tried to put some limits on the dress and behavior of the models. After polling the community , the policy on booth babes has been clarified, and some specific details have been added regarding how publishers can use paid models to push their games. 6,313 people took the poll, with 60 percent of respondents either liking or loving the ban on booth babes.

If you’re a DROID owner harboring a grudge against the world because you don’t yet have Android 2.2 on your device, there’s reason to smile today. MyDroidWorld has leaked a Froyo ROM, complete with root and SuperUser permissions, for your beloved DROIIIID. From what we’ve been able to gather everything, except Wi-Fi, is included in this ROM; Wi-Fi was apparently removed to “protect the original source” of the ROM. We’ve got links to all of the files you’ll need, as well as a complete set of instructions.

There’s quite a few pieces of information running around, basically rampant, the Internet right now about the next models coming out of Motorola . We know that the company is planning on releasing two new Android-based models some time in July , and we firmly believe that those are the MB810/Shadow/Xtreme and Droid 2.
