IFA 2010 Wrap-Up
Sep 5th

IFA 2010 isn’t quite finished yet – the show continues through until midway next week – but it’s had its stab at the major headlines. Would-be iPad “killers” and 3D were this year’s themes, with Panasonic, Sony, Sharp and others all trying to convince us that the 1080p HDTV we bought a couple of years ago should really be traded in for a new, 3D-capable set. Product of the show, though, has to be the Samsung Galaxy Tab , with the Korean company delivering a slate that we consistently heard people say was significantly more appealing than they expected.

Emblaze First Else smartphone axed; Intuition UI may be licensed
Jun 30th

Fledgeling touchscreen smartphone UI developer Emblaze has axed its First Else handset, citing “critical delays in deliveries and the current status of the project.” The First Else was to be the first device to use the company’s one-thumb interface, Intuition, promising single hand ease of use with a new, semi-circular options wheel. The First Else itself had specs much in line with the rest of the smartphone market, perhaps adding to Emblaze’s concerns they wouldn’t be able to sufficiently position the handset as distinct. However, this might not be the last we see of the Intuition UI, since Emblaze is now apparently looking for licensing opportunities which could see it used on other devices

Early Retirement

Over dinner my father looks at me and says, with a straight face: “I hear Google might start building its own phone.” I’m trying to figure out which direction to take the conversation. Condescension would be too aggressive, no matter how much my inner troll wants to bait him

NEC LifeTouch Android tablet isn’t exactly a beauty
Jun 20th

Hey, they say beauty’s in the eye of the beholder, but we’re going to go out on a limb here and call this one like we see it: NEC ‘s LifeTouch Android tablet isn’t a looker, in our opinion. That said, this 7-incher runs Android 2.1 and packs an ARM Cortex A8 processor.

Mac malware OpinionSpy spotted in dodgy downloads
Jun 2nd

Hot on the heels of Microsoft’s retort to Google’s Windows security snub comes word of what’s being described as a high-risk spyware/malware exploit affecting OS X computers. According to security firm Intego, the spyware – which it calls OpinionSpy but which has also been identified as PremierOpinion – is being distributed through various free screensavers for OS X (full list after the cut), and if installed is capable of “scanning files to recording user activity, as well as sending information about this activity to remote servers and opening a backdoor on infected Macs.” The malware is the handiwork of comScore (through their VoiceFive Networks subsidiary), and is downloaded as part of the installation process for the various screensavers. Some of the affected apps do indicate in the ToS that ”market research” program is installed, but not all; once installed – complete with root privileges – it opents an HTTP backdoor, analyses files on all available volumes, all packets from the local network going in and out, copies personal data from browsers, and then sends encrypted reports to various remote servers including e-mail addresses, iChat message headers and URLs, as well as other data.

Two weeks of travel, Ten iPad lessons
May 13th

A while back, I tried traveling on business with nothing but the help of three smart phones . I quickly ran into the headroom of those devices and, by the time I was home, I had a huge list of tasks I needed to deal with that could only be done on a computer

The iPad Camera Connection Kit is not only a collection of two dock connector dongles designed to help you get photos onto an iPad from nearly any digital camera. It turns out the kit can also help you connect other USB devices to an iPad, making it that much more useful to those looking to go iPad-only for some tasks. One of the Camera Connection Kit’s two dongles has a USB port for connecting almost any digital camera via its USB cable (the other has an SD card slot)
