Playing video on an Android device can sometimes be a bit of a chore. The platform’s native media framework has very limited support for mainstream formats and can really only play H.264 video that is in an MP4 or 3GP container.

We already knew Nokia and Intel were deeply in love, thanks to their collaboration on MeeGo , but now the pairing has decided to hook up with the University of Oulu in Finland and open a joint research center . Part of the Intel Labs Europe scheme, the new Joint Innovation Center will focus on “new and compelling mobile user experiences,” taking advantage of mobile device processing grunt to offer 3D graphics and even holograms. Twenty-four R&D staff will be beavering away at that, using the University of Oulu’s existing 3D research as their starting point.

Yay, open source! Anyone interested in the DROID X source code? If you are, the files are posted on Motorola’s developer site. The code weighs in at a hefty 280 MB and was actually released several days ago on July 28th

Dell thinking about shipping Google’s Chrome OS on netbooks

A Dell executive has revealed that the company is in talks with Google and is exploring the possibility of shipping netbooks with Chrome OS, the search giant’s cloud-centric Linux-based mobile operating system. The news reflects Dell’s interest in experimenting with new platforms. Dell has experimented with desktop Linux, but hasn’t really committed to the platform in the consumer space
