Aug 27th
![]()
Movie studios are extending their efforts to take down sites that offer pirated material, with a new lawsuit targeting an advertising company that provides services to such sites. Warner Bros. and Disney have teamed up to sue Triton Media, accusing the company of both contributory and induced copyright infringement because Triton helps to keep the sites alive by providing them with advertising and referral income

Google adds 400 full-length videos to YouTube catalog
Aug 27th

Google has launched a new “Movies” category on its streaming-video site YouTube. The videos, which range from bizarre to obscure, are full-length films (we’re not sure some of them were ever in theaters) and are completely free. YouTube’s head of video partnerships, Donagh O’Malley, was quoted by The Guardian as saying: “This is one of many efforts to ensure that people can find all the different kinds of video they want to see, from bedroom vlogs and citizen journalism reports to full-length films and TV shows.” You can browse the catalog by heading over to youtube.com/movies ; there seems to be an abundance of Jackie Chan and Three Stooges flicks

George Lucas officially announces Star Wars on Blu-ray in 2011
Aug 14th

As rumored , all six Star Wars movies will be released together on Blu-ray in 2011 for the 35th anniversary of the release of A New Hope . George Lucas personally announced the set on stage at the Celebration V event, and showed off a deleted scene from Return of the Jedi that will be included (embedded after the break.) While the “highest picture and audio quality” and extensive special features are promised, what won’t make it to Blu-ray are the original versions of the movies; Lucas told the New York Times that only the special editions will be included, since restoring the original versions in high enough quality would cost too much. No word on price, release date or any plans to release the films individually, but if you can stand living in a world where Greedo shot first then this will certainly be on next year’s shopping list.

In A World With No Metal: Cardboard Warfare
Jul 5th

This is a 3:30 war movie made entirely with cardboard weaponry . It’s incredibly well made though. Granted not as good as Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers , but if you expected it to be you obviously have zero grasp on reality

Sky planning dish-free IPTV Sky+ service
Jun 7th

It used to be straightforward: satellite TV, like that from Sky, comes via a satellite dish, and cable comes via cable. Now, according to some leaked documents from Sky UK, it seems things might not be quite so clean-cut anymore. TrustedReviews have heard that Sky UK are ramping up to offer their Sky+ service “through a new set top box supplied by Sky connected to your Freeview aerial and broadband connection”, that would use IPTV distribution rather than the traditional dish.
