Yay, open source! Anyone interested in the DROID X source code? If you are, the files are posted on Motorola’s developer site. The code weighs in at a hefty 280 MB and was actually released several days ago on July 28th

With the release of the DROID X just around the corner, we thought we would take some time and revisit one of the differentiating features of this particular Android handset: its 8 megapixel, mechanical shutter camera. We were a bit critical of the DROID X’s ability to take quality photographs with the default setting on the first try, but after some finagling — and trial and error — we’ve managed to hone our skills. We have a video walkthrough of the camera’s settings and features, as well as an image sample or two, after the break.

Netflix hiring Android developers, client on the way

It appears as though Netflix is hiring an Android developer to “help build [an] Instant Streaming client implementation on Android devices.” Obviously, the good news would be that an official Netflix app — that would allow subscribers to watch Instant Queue movies right on their handsets — appears to be on the way. The bad news is that it may still be a while until we actually see said app. What do you think of the Netflix Instant Queue on your mobile

AT&T Wireless has millions of US customers, and it continues to boast the largest number of smartphone users. Despite this, we hear numerous complaints from readers and reporters that AT&T 3G coverage is spotty; even if AT&T has reasonably fast 3G coverage where you live, that doesn’t necessarily mean the coverage is good where you work or where you travel most often. From this point of view, Verizon’s 3G coverage map is frankly more impressive .

FCC takes 90MHz of wireless spectrum from mobile satellite service bands for mobile data

Friday the FCC announced that, it would be reclaiming 90MHz worth of wireless spectrum from the mobile satellite service (MSS) bands and reallocating that service to wireless broadband use. Over the last few years, there has been lots of talk about freeing up wireless spectrum to accelerate the growth and availability of mobile broadband coverage around the country. Wireless coverage is seen as the best way to get rural areas connected since the landscape in some areas can be challenging when it comes to running fixed line broadband and running wire is expensive

T-Mobile’s Father Day promotion yields highest activations ever?

We haven’t been able to independently confirm this one, but a T-Mobile tipster tells us that T-Mobile had the largest number of new activations on Saturday for their promotion. Every phone was free with new activation and 2 year agreement.

Palm working on new devices and WebOS upgrade, Flash delay unexplained

If you were worried that we’d never see a true successor to the Palm Pre after Palm’s announced acquisition by HP , especially after an HP executive made it seem like WebOS is its main concern , you can now rest a bit easier. During an AT&T webinar for mobile developers on Thursday, Palm Developer Advocate Josh Marinacci confirmed that the company is indeed working on new devices, as well as a new version of WebOS, according to PreCentral . “You’re going to find the next year very exciting,” Marinacci said
