Eye-controlled earphones let you pick up phone calls with a glance
Sep 3rd

The Japanese wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo has recently developed and demonstrated a peculiar pair of headphones that can precisely detect a user’s eye movements without a camera, and use those movements to control electronic devices such as mobile phones and portable music players. DoCoMo started working on this idea back in 2008 by adapting an electrooculogram (EOG), a medical device used for measuring eye response, to their purposes. An EOG works on the principle that the human cornea has a positive electrical charge.

Samsung Wave S8500 Review
Jun 4th

From its confusing launch back in December 2009, to its feature-packed handset debut at Mobile World Congress and then all the way to the SlashGear test bench today, Samsung’s bada OS has had a rocky journey. Showing up for the first time on the Samsung Wave S8500, the new platform promises the flexibility of a smartphone OS with the easy usability of a feature-phone. That makes this a double review, perhaps: new platform, new phone

Nokia Yahoo! Phone “out of the scope of the announcement”
May 24th

Sources had suggested that there’d be no sign of the well-rumored Nokia-made Yahoo! Phone at the two companies’ press event this morning, and sure enough it’s all about Ovi services . Asked in a Q&A whether there would be a Yahoo! phone, Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo told reporters and investors “No, no, that is out of the scope of the announcement.” It’s unclear – and we wouldn’t be surprised if that was the intention – whether by “outside the scope of the announcement” means there’s no such device on the cards or that it’s merely not on the agenda for today’s presentation. Frankly, we wouldn’t be surprised to hear that Nokia and Yahoo! had been exploring some sort of co-branded device, though whether that would actually be a real platform – like Google’s Android – or merely a logo exercise would remain to be seen

GenUpload: Two weeks with KIN
May 21st

A few weeks back, I wrote my first impressions of Microsoft’s new KIN phones , and their appeal specifically to the different way teenagers use cellphones. But understanding the intent of the KIN and a few hours of testing wasn’t really enough to get a real picture of how well it would actually work as a phone for teenagers. So, for two weeks, I shelved my featurephone and iPod Touch, and went with just a KIN (in this case, the KIN 2)

Nokia and Yahoo! deal for mobile services imminent?
May 21st

Nokia are going full-steam ahead with their own package of services – the feature-toting update to Ovi Maps earlier this week is proof of that – but are they also planning a deal with Yahoo! which will see the latter company’s email, search and other applications and services built into certain Nokia models? That’s what AllThingsD are reporting , having been invited to Yahoo!’s “Project Nike” launch next week with the promise of “an exciting announcement about providing global consumers with rich online and mobile experiences”
