For most of us, storing and accessing the vast majority of our computer data involves using either hard disk or solid state drives or perhaps a combination of both. Each method boasts its own advantages and while the battle for storage supremacy between the two rages in public, research at Japan’s Tohoku University has revealed another option. Using a pulse generator to alter the electrical state of tiny dots on a ferroelectric medium, Kenkou Tanaka and Yasuo Cho have successfully recorded data at around eight times the density of current hard disk drives..

Acer’s LumiRead ereader will make its official debut at IFA 2010 next week, according to Lesen ‘s sources at the company, with a commercial launch – in Germany at least – following on in September. As with the Amazon Kindle, a second source suggests, the LumiRead will come with free 3G access to download new ebooks, and a sticker price of around €250 ($318).

The guys over at Asetek decided to see what they could do with their liquid-cooling components, taking a 2008 dual-CPU 2.8GHz Mac Pro – overclocked to 3.16GHz – with custom cooling and comparing it to a newer, stock 3.2GHz air-cooled model straight from Apple.
