Ultra Portable Laptop Riser from Laboratory 424
Aug 11th

Whether you need to lift your laptop above desk level to make it more comfortable to type or to cool off the searing heat coming from the bottom, the Mini Riser from Laboratory 424 is probably the most compact riser ever. It’s an adjustable metal wire coil wrapped in a rubbery vinyl that grips both your laptop and the desk

Clear fit WiMAX to Intel Core notebooks at Best Buy
Jun 21st

Clearwire has announced that it plans to slot WiMAX modems into all the Intel Core based notebooks at Best Buy by the holidays, in an attempt to drum up business for their 4G network. It’s unclear what affect the 4G modems will have on the price – systems tipped to be included in the promotion are the Dell Inspiron 14, Dell Inspiron 15, Dell Mini 10, and Toshiba Satellite M645 , among others – but if buyers opt for a two-year CLEAR agreement they’ll get a $100 rebate. Clearwire’s choice of Core-based machines is unsurprising, given that Intel has invested heavily in WiMAX technology

Libretto W100: has Toshiba delivered Courier?
Jun 21st

Put the promo shots of the new Toshiba Libretto W100 next to the leaked renders of Microsoft’s Courier project and you’d be forgiven for assuming one is the production version of the other. When I talked to Toshiba late last week at a preview for the new Libretto, however, they were keen to distance their new gadget from what was described by one team member as “only ever a design study”.

Toshiba Portégé R700 hands-on [Video]
Jun 21st

Toshiba has unveiled their latest ultraportable, the Toshiba Portégé R700, and while it may look like your average thin-and-light in some key ways it’s actually pretty unique. The 13.3-inch R700 – which will also go on sale as the consumer-focussed Satellite R630 – uses a new airflow cooling system that, by pulling in cool air over the hotter components, rather than pushing out hot air, means Toshiba can not only use regular Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors rather than their less-powerful ULV counterparts, but do so in a machine that stays cool to the touch. First impressions & hands-on video after the cut It’s also the thinnest and lightest ODD-equipped laptop in Europe, with a magnesium chassis, honeycomb palm-rest and a motherboard that, thanks to collaboration with Intel, is one-third the size of what you’d find in rival machines.

Toshiba Libretto W100 resurrects the classic UMPC brand with dual 7-inch displays
Jun 21st

Oh yes, Toshiba ‘s dualscreen laptop of sorts is real, and it’s exactly what you’ve inevitably been staring at right up there. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the company’s laptop business, Tosh gave its classic Libretto ultraportable brand some mouth-to-mouth with the W100. Yeah, we couldn’t believe it ourselves when we saw it, but the device certainly is legit — it has two 7-inch, 1024 x 600-resolution touchscreens, and is powered by a 1.2GHz Intel Pentium U5400 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 64GB SSD and Windows 7 Home Premium

Compaq CQ62Z speeds past Atom for $380, jury’s out on battery life
Jun 7th

We won’t lie, the last time we bought a standard Compaq was in high school — approximately eight months before the LCD hinge broke — but it’s not everyday you find a notebook for a netbook price. (Okay, it might not last as long on a charge.) This week, HP’s silently launched the Compaq CQ62Z, which comes with AMD’s new 2.2GHz V120 CPU, ATI Radeon HD 4250 graphics and a 15.6-inch LED-backlit display at a legitimately fantastic $380

It may be nearly a year since we first got our hands on Dell’s thin-and-light Inspiron 14z , but the laptop still certainly holds its own in its class, and Dell has now made an offer that’s awfully hard to refuse — it’s lowered the price to just $399.
