Inside Apple’s Antenna Design and Test Labs

Hardly had our liveblog finished when Apple sprung the second half of their iPhone 4 antenna event, the “show” companion to Steve Jobs’ presentation “tell”. SlashGear was among eleven journalists and analysts – both print and online – to be taken around the company’s wireless lab, formerly one of the best kept secrets on the Cupertino campus, and now a multi-million test facility featuring custom hardware, fake brains and kit that wouldn’t look out of place in a sci-fi film. Apple : Free Bumper case to all iPhone 4 owners

In Apple’s press conference, Apple concluded that it was a common problem that most smartphones would face signal problems while holding them. According to Apple, the iPhone 4 only drops slightly more calls then the iPhone 3GS – it’s just a very small fraction – less than 1 more call per 100. So there was nothing about any software/hardware fix or recall of the iPhone 4s to resolve the antenna problem

Mongoose Studio’s dozen iPod cluster display is an expensive way to watch Tron (video)
Jul 5th

Most of us would be happy to get video to play on a single video to play on our PMP without having to run it through some sort of transcoder first, but the folks at Mongoose Studio needed something more complex. They’ve released a video of a project that’s been in the works for some time, clustering 12 iPod touches into a sort of bezel-riffic widescreen display. All are controlled by a master, 13th iPod that can cause them to display a clock in the interest of verifying synchronization (which is far from perfect, as you’ll see in the embed below), or to trigger the playing of a movie.

iPhone 4 Diamond Edition: white, unlocked, and $20k
Jul 5th

Looking for something a bit more eye-catching than a iPhone 4 with a wooden veneer ? Then it looks like you can once again thank Stuart Hughes for throwing any subtlety to the wind and going all out with the so-called iPhone 4 Diamond Edition. As you can see, not only does the phone pack a smattering of diamonds (including a bedazzled Apple logo), but it’s a white iPhone 4 (32GB, naturally), and unlocked for good measure.
