EVO 4G getting Android 2.2 this weekend?

Engadget is reporting that HTC EVO 4G owners may be getting Android Deuce Deuce as soon as this weekend. The blog received a whole heap of Sprint corporate slides that detail a launch plan; the plan includes an official announcement scheduled for tomorrow and code rollout beginning on August 1st.

Motorola DROID 2 user guide leaks, cases spotted

Man, how much longer can Motorola and Verizon Wireless try and keep the lid on the DROID 2? Earlier today, Droid-Life obtained a user guide for the yet-to-be-released DROID 2 as well as an image of DROID 2 cases on sale at Best Buy. The user guide reveals that the device will have Motorola’s UI enhancements — same as the DROID X — and will in all likelihood be launching with Android 2.2; as opposed to Android 2.1.

Google announced its second quarter 2010 earnings on Thursday, and the earnings conference call painted a rosy picture of the current state of Android. According to Google CFO Patrick Pichette, and Senior VP of Product management Jonathan Rosenberg, Android is currently not a huge resource investment for Google but promises a “formidable return” as the “entire ecosystem is exploding.” According to Rosenberg, the web browser is the most popular app on an Android device with search being its primary usage.

Overbite Project brings Gopher protocol to Android

The Overbite Project is an open-source effort to produce browser plugins and client applications that enable support for Gopher , an early network protocol that preceded HTML and the contemporary World Wide Web. The lead developer behind the project is retrocomputing enthusiast Cameron Kaiser, one of the few remaining champions of gopherspace.

These five Nexus One smartphones may seem to have defects, but there’s actually nothing wrong with their AMOLED screens — the funky colors are an attempt to improve battery life by turning off unnecessary sub-pixel LEDs. Hooking up his handset to an industrial power meter, Android engineer Jeff Sharkey discovered a blood-red screen drew 42 percent less current than full color — the least of any combination by far — purportedly doubling the effective battery life of the phone. This morning, Yahoo! announced the release of Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Messenger app for Android. Available for download in the Market, the Yahoo! apps provide a tad more functionality to those Android users who aren’t “with Google” like their phone’s OS may be. Bell Canada to launch Samsung Galaxy S, will use Vibrant moniker

Bell Canada has announced that it will be launching the Samsung Galaxy S — bearing the name Vibrant — in the coming months. A splash page has been put up at http://galaxys.bell.ca and one of our “Ninjas from the North” was kind enough to shoot us an official Bell memo.
