Mozilla outlines plans for Firefox in 2012: less emphasis on version numbers, more focus on user experience

We’ve already seen Firefox move to a more rapid release schedule, and it looks like we’ll soon also see far less emphasis placed on those rapidly increasing version numbers (much like Google has already done with Chrome). That’s one detail revealed by Mozilla in a blog post today, which recaps its activity in 2011 and outlines some of its goals for 2012. That includes silent updates in the background to counter what Mozilla calls “update fatigue,” as well as a number of efforts to make web apps more integrated into Firefox (and complement the Mozilla Marketplace ).

Intel joins the Document Foundation, pimps LibreOffice

You’re forgiven if you missed this little blip on the news radar: Intel has joined the advisory board of the Document Foundation and added the coalition’s LibreOffice to the AppUp market. What’s more, Chipzilla actually worked with SUSE to help optimize the free and open source office suite for Intel hardware and, as part of the advisory board, will be providing the project with significant monetary support.

Today’s driving laws are awash with restrictions designed to help cut down on distracted driving — no texting , no TV , no phone calls and no fun. The good ‘ol car stereo has managed to stay off the ban list, but rest easy, cautious driver, if it were to be outlawed, the folks at Cirque could build one that wouldn’t respond to the driver’s commands.

HP reports Q1 2012 financials: $30 billion net revenue, $1.5 billion net earnings, big drop in PC sales

HP reported results for its first fiscal quarter of 2012 this afternoon, including $30 billion in net revenue (down seven percent from the previous year), and net earnings of $1.5 billion (down a full 44 percent). Partly contributing to that drop is a slump from its Personal Systems Group, which saw revenue slip 15 percent year-over-year, and total desktop and notebook units decline a rather drastic 19 and 18 percent, respectively
