In 2007, hoping to kick off a new era of Mac gaming, Apple CEO Steve Jobs told the crowd at the Worldwide Developer Conference that Electronic Arts would begin aggressively porting its popular titles to the Macintosh . The announcement accompanied a lineup of more powerful Macs with improved graphics adapters, making them a better platform for games. While there was much hoopla, there hasn't been much action. EA only lists 11 titles on its Mac games page , several of which were the ones announced back in 2007. Gaming remains an afterthought on the Mac, and many Mac owners either use a Boot Camp installation of Windows when they want to play, or keep a Windows box around just for that purpose. But now Valve, the Seattle-based game developer, may be about to change that. The company announced Monday that it would bring its Steam gaming system to the Mac . Steam will allow you to play the games you own for the PC on your Mac, and will even keep track of your progress in any given title as you move between platforms. From VentureBeat : Valve plans to launch Steam on Macs in April, along with all of the company's games running on the Source game engine -- including Left 4 Dead 2 , Portal , and Team Fortress 2 . Valve has updated Source to perform natively on the Mac, so games should perform just as well as they do on Windows PCs. Portal 2 will be the first game released simultaneously across both Mac and PC platforms. That alone is significant, since Mac versions of popular PC games traditionally come out several months (and sometimes years) after the PC version. By bringing Steam over to Macs, Valve could potentially help solve that problem. The company has also announced two new features for Steam that will affect both Mac and PC users. "Steam Play" allows games purchased via Steam on PCs to be available on the Mac, and vice versa. It also means that games Steam users already own on the PC side will be available on their Macs. Even more intriguing is "Steam Cloud", which will allow players to continue their progress on games across platforms. You could play through a level of Half Life 2 on your PC desktop, and continue at a later point on your Mac laptop. For those who are unfamiliar, Steam is a gaming service that combines several features. It automates the process of installing updates and fixes to game, as well as making it simple to add more levels and other content. It also makes it very easy to find servers when you want to play against other gamers. And, in a form of actually useful DRM, it lets you play your games on any PC on which you set up your Steam account. That latter feature is what will bring Steam to the Mac. In the image above you can see I've got Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 installed on my Windows system. When the Mac version of Steam is out, I'll be able to install it and download the Mac versions for free. When I? complete a level of L4D2 on my PC, then launch the game on my Mac, I'll be able to pick up where I left off. In the past, Valve had largely ignored the Mac as a gaming platform, but this development is like going from 0 to 60, instantly. It's good to see a game developer getting serious about cross-platform gaming. It's about time. ? Technorati Tags: steam , valve , games , mac

My colleague Dwight Silverman noted earlier today that the new online venture WeSLGT.com is up, though all the features aren't there yet. In the meantime, we can tell you what the site--or what its founder J.R. Cohen envisions becoming a movement--is all about. When Cohen worked as general manager of Coffee Groundz , he would often tweet about local vendors whose goods the shop carried. And he'd tag his tweets #supportlocal or #growtogether . That eventually turned into #SLGT , a tag that started to get picked up in other cities as well. The new site takes the movement to support local, independently owned businesses one step further by essentially creating an online directory. Board member Brian Truax says the group would eventually like to add functions to the site that would let users post reviews and search for businesses by neighborhood, similar to Yelp . There are also plans to add newsletters subscriptions for individual businesses, musicians and events as well as videos. "There will be lots of videos so people can see the person behind the company and so there's a sense of transparency," said Cohen, who has drawn national press for his use of social media. "I run my life just like we run SLGT, with transparency." Right now, a one-year listing costs $25 through the end of South By Southwest, the annual music and media conference that starts in Austin Friday. They haven't decided how much the rate will jump at the end of the promotion. Cohen said the board is still trying to finalize what criteria it will use to determine if a business is local and qualifies for a listing. Things they'll likely consider? Ownership, utilization of other local businesses, and local job creation, he said. --Purva Patel
