iPod Shuffle 4th Generation Gets Torn Down by iFixit
Sep 7th

You’d think that iFixit would try and catch a break every once in awhile, but considering how many new pieces of interesting technology get released on a nearly daily basis, we imagine that they can’t afford to take a break.

Microsoft’s Hohm energy efficiency and tracking service, still in beta, has a unique sense of style. Who expects a discussion about insulation R-values to involve pirate jokes? “What do pirates look for in attic insulation?” Hohm asks.

IFA 2010 Wrap-Up
Sep 5th

IFA 2010 isn’t quite finished yet – the show continues through until midway next week – but it’s had its stab at the major headlines. Would-be iPad “killers” and 3D were this year’s themes, with Panasonic, Sony, Sharp and others all trying to convince us that the 1080p HDTV we bought a couple of years ago should really be traded in for a new, 3D-capable set. Product of the show, though, has to be the Samsung Galaxy Tab , with the Korean company delivering a slate that we consistently heard people say was significantly more appealing than they expected.

For Apple iOS is Key
Sep 3rd

Steve Jobs rattled off a lot of numbers at Wednesday’s event. As an analyst I like statistics and making sense of statistics. That’s why the platform strategy of iOS struck me when I thought about Apple’s product lineup, specifically iPads, iPhones, iPod Touches, and even Apple TV. Since these products run iOS, iOS as a platform is experiencing rapid growth and tremendous momentum. Sometimes people only think of iOS as a platform as it relates to the iPhone in terms of growth. The reality is there will continue to be a growing number of iOS devices on the market as Apple could potentially approach 1 billion iOS devices in the next five years.

Sprint expands ‘Common Cents Mobile’ to 500 additional Walmarts
Sep 1st

Today, Sprint announced that it would expand its Common Cents Mobile offering to an additional 500 Walmart locations. As the press release explains, “Common Cents Mobile is the only pay-as-you-go service offering Round Down minutes, allowing budget-conscious consumers to pay for only what they use — or even less.” If you’re reading this article, this service is — in all likelihood — not aimed at you. ”Smartphones come with bells and whistles like Web browsing and music — features that for many, are simply unnecessary and can be seen as a waste of time and money,” said Common Cents Mobile’s chief marketing officer. The service, which originally launched in May of this year, is now available in just under 1,250 Walmart stores across the country.

Movie studios are extending their efforts to take down sites that offer pirated material, with a new lawsuit targeting an advertising company that provides services to such sites. SmartDevices’ $289 SmartQ T7 3G Android tablet gets video unboxing
Aug 26th

We have to admit, we didn’t expect SmartDevices’ SmartQ T7 tablet to make it to a launch outside of China, so the news that the 7-inch slate has dropped at Carrypad ‘s German HQ is quite surprising. They’ve wasted no time in unboxing the Android 2.1 tablet, and considering the $289 price tag ($249 if you don’t mind missing out on 3G) they’re impressed.

Court declines to force rerun of $30 billion in FCC auctions
Aug 25th

Holy LTE, Batman! While all of us wireless broadband fans were sleeping restfully in our beds, little did we know that over $30 billion in Federal Communications Commission wireless spectrum licenses hung in the balance. Turns out that a bunch of disgruntled spectrum bidders from the last two major auctions had taken the FCC to court over some of its auction rules, asking the agency to “nullify the auction results, but permit the winning bidders to keep their licenses unless and until they are won by another bidder at re-auction.” In other words, they wanted a do-over
