Microsoft to release fix for Windows Shortcut flaw on Monday

Microsoft has announced plans to release of an out-of-band update on Monday to address the Windows Shortcut flaw revealed less than two weeks ago. The software giant has been keeping a close watch on the use of .LNK files exploiting the vulnerability and has concluded that it needs to act faster than usual. Microsoft typically releases security patches on the second Tuesday of each month, with the next slated for August 10

New proton measurements may throw physics a curve

We may have been overestimating the proton for the last 60 years, if a new experiment has anything to say about it. A group of researchers have tried a new method of measuring the proton’s radius that involved getting a muon to orbit it instead of an electron. The new approach is ten times more accurate than the way it has been done since the invention of quantum mechanics, and it has produced a value for the proton’s radius that is four percent smaller than the currently accepted one.

WSJ: Sony recalling over 500,000 VAIO laptops

The Wall Street Journal reports that electronics giant Sony is recalling over 500,000 laptops for a “temperature-control defect that may cause excessive heat and distort the shape of the laptop” and/or ” skin burns.” The WSJ goes onto write: “The recall concerns some of the company’s F and C-Series Vaio laptops sold since January 2010. the recall applies to 259,000 laptops in the U.S., 103,000 in Europe, 120,000 in Asia and 52,000 in Japan.” Sony has stated that customers affected by the recall can fix the problem themselves by downloading a patch from Sony’s website, or have Sony pick the machine up to perform the repair work (which is just confusing )
